ATLANTA (AP) ? For decades, Atlanta has been the economic engine of the South, a dynamic city on the move. But if you've ever gotten behind the wheel here, it doesn't feel that way.
The Atlanta metropolitan area has some of the worst traffic in America, with drivers routinely stuck in monumental, bumper-to-bumper jams that can turn a 10-minute trip into a miserable, one-hour slog.
Hoping to ease the gridlock, the region's political and business leaders are pushing for a 1-cent increase in the sales tax to pay for billions of dollars in highway improvements and other transportation projects. The proposed tax is on Tuesday's ballot.
Civic leaders say that Atlanta's economic future hangs in the balance, with the metropolitan area in danger of losing business to more-livable cities unless it acts now to reduce congestion.
"Tampa, Charlotte, Denver, Dallas ... they all hope we lose," said Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce President Sam Williams. "The competition has been taking advantage of this."
Atlanta's traffic problems have been 50 years in the making, a consequence of runaway growth. The metropolitan area's population swelled from nearly 1.6 million in 1960 to more than 5.2 million in 2010, and many of the newcomers settled in suburbs radiating farther and farther from Atlanta's core.
Now those commuters are clogging the highways that run straight through the middle of the city or form a big ring around it.
Atlanta has a commuter rail system, but it is laid out basically like a big plus sign and doesn't reach many parts of the city. And there has long been opposition to its expansion.
The TomTom Congestion Index, compiled by the maker of automobile GPS devices, has ranked Atlanta the nation's eighth-most clogged city. According to the 2010 Census, Atlanta had the fourth-worst commute in America, with drivers taking an average of 30 minutes to get to or from work.
From billboards to beauty shops, the campaign for the tax has been hard-fought in recent weeks, and polls suggest the vote could be close.
Metro Atlanta is one of a dozen regions across Georgia that will vote independently on the tax increase, which could generate a total of more than $18 billion statewide for transportation projects over the next decade.
Atlanta stands to gain the biggest share. Supporters estimate the 1-cent increase would generate more than $8.4 billion between 2013 and 2022. The sales tax in the region is now around 5 or 6 cents on the dollar in most cases.
Each region developed a list of projects involving such things as roads, bridges, mass transit, ports, airports and bicycle and pedestrian facilities. Metro Atlanta's list is heavy on road projects ? including the widening or resurfacing of highways, the building of new ramps and reconstruction of a busy interchange ? and light on mass transit.
Opposition in metro Atlanta has crossed political and racial lines, creating unlikely allies and adversaries.
Pro-business Republicans, including Gov. Nathan Deal, are finding themselves at odds with tea-party leaders in the GOP, who argue government can't be trusted to manage the tax revenue responsibly.
The fiscal conservatives have made common cause with black Democrats, who say the plan doesn't do enough to help poor people and minorities because it devotes little to mass transit and overlooks some sections of the city, and with environmental groups, which fear more pollution and development.
"We're just united against a bad idea," said Neill Herring of the Sierra Club. "We've got to break this sprawl habit."
Supporters have bankrolled an $8 million campaign under the banner Untie Atlanta and say the transportation projects will create jobs via the construction work itself and the improvements that will ease congestion and make the city more attractive to companies looking to relocate.
"As a result of our failure to deal with our traffic issues as other leading cities in the world are doing far more rapidly, we risk entering a period of decline," Mayor Kasim Reed said. "This is our region's leadership moment."
Nikki Strickland's commute to work in Atlanta is 30 minutes each way on a great day. But if she leaves the house in suburban Alpharetta after 7:30 a.m., it's too late. Then the drive takes an hour or more.
Her husband's trek into midtown isn't much better. "He can get completely stuck for hours if the wrong thing happens," Strickland said.
She said she is considering voting for the tax but is conflicted. Taxing groceries ? something everyone has to have, unlike a new car ? isn't fair, Strickland said. Moreover, she said, "I just don't feel like Atlanta is serious about transit. And I don't trust our institutions to do this. State government is so dysfunctional."

Many people take for granted the daily sounds their ears encounter: the wind blowing, a child laughing, the alarm clock going off. They also may not know how or why they hear or don?t hear these important sounds around them. However, the audiologists and medical professionals in a hearing center work to educate their patients on the workings of the ear. The ear is composed of three main parts, all of which are important to its functioning.
The outer ear, which can also be called the pinna, is the visible part of the ear (the part that holds earrings). The job of the pinna is to collect sound waves. The concave shape allows for easy collection of these waves. The ear canal is also an important part of the outer ear. Once the sound waves are captured by the pinna, they begin to travel down into the ear via the ear canal.
These vibrations will eventually reach the middle ear. Composed of the eardrum and ossicles, it has a unique job. The eardrum works to turn the inaudible sound waves into vibrations. Once the sound waves have reached the eardrum, they cause it to vibrate, much like what happens when someone beats a real drum. The next stop is the ossicles, a group of very small bones. These bones work with each other simultaneously all day long to ensure that all of the vibrations are transferred to the inner ear.
The inner ear contains the cochlea. The cochlea is very important. Many patients in a hearing center are left with hearing problems due to damaged cochlea. Depending on the extent of this damage, cochlear implants may be used to regain some use of the inner ear, allowing for partial hearing restoration. The cochlea contains fluid, and this fluid moves as the vibrations become audible. The hairs that surround the cochlea also move as the vibrations reach them. The hairs and the fluid in the cochlea work together to create nerve signals. The nerve signals are then sent to the brain where they are decoded and registered as a specific sound. All of this happens instantaneously and occurs all day.
The inner ear also has another important job. It is what helps keep everyone balanced, so we stand upright instead of falling to the floor. The fluid in the inner ear lets the brain know what position someone is standing in. This allows for the brain to compensate by sending messages to engage specific muscles in the arms or legs.
Education is one of the key goals of a hearing center. It is extremely important that a patient understands the components of their ear. Whenever a patient knows what is going on in their body, it is much easier for them to comprehend what the audiologist is telling them. This allows patients to make the best possible decisions about their hearing treatments.
Now that you?ve gotten a primer on how your ear works, you may be ready to visit a Poughkeepsie NY hearing center to learn more about possible treatments for any auditory problems you?ve been having. To learn more about your options, visit http://www.miracle-ear-poughkeepsie.com.

It has been a fantastic run, but it's time for me to try something new, so I'm leaving CNET. This is my last post for this great company, at least in my current role as Editor at Large.
Instead of boring everyone with the usual departure platitudes or a history of illustrious achievements, I thought I'd give out a few awards to companies, products, and ideas that I covered for CNET, ideas that have stayed with me long after I wrote about them. So here they are: The Rafe Needleman I'm Outta Here Awards. The Outies. There are 10, of course.
If you're wondering where to find me next: Evernote. I'm going to be a developer advocate for this great company, which, if you've followed my work over the years, you know I really believe in. I'll also be writing -- with editorial independence, they tell me -- about new tech concepts that I see, best ideas for entrepreneurs (from my new vantage point), and productivity. Read more on the Evernote blog. You can e-mail me at rafe@evernote.com, and follow me on Twitter, or Facebook, or Google+.
And now, for the first -- and hopefully last -- time ever...
1. Best customer experience: Apple
I am not a fanboy. I am not a fanboy. I am not a fanboy. Maybe if I say it enough you'll eventually believe it. But even when the Apple products I buy fail me completely (which is often), I still love the company, because its customer service and repair experience is so painless. That's right: Apple hardware is horribly unreliable. And I keep buying it. Good job, Apple. I hate myself.
Read: From Dell Hell to Genius Bar
2. Best online retailer: Everyone's refurb and outlet store
Unless you like paying for packaging, you don't have to pay full price for many tech hardware items: laptops, TVs, DVRs, you name it. Buy refurbished units. Usually they're just as good as brand-new items, look just as shiny, and come with the same warranty. They might be half a spec out of date. It's worth it.
Read: How to save money with refurb laptops
3. Worst pervasive technology: 3D TV
These are my awards, so I get to throw darts as I want, and 3D is one bubble I'd like to pop. Yes, it's amazing. For most of you. But for some of us, all 3D TV and movies do is give us headaches.
On the plus side, the non-3D showings of 3D movies are hardly ever crowded.

4. Best new idea for e-mail: Self-deleting messages
Unread e-mails are barnacles. They stick around in your in-box, just clogging things up, taking up space, and possibly slowing things down. And many e-mails, especially commercial messages from companies you do business with, are pointless after a short period of time. So why do they stick around? They don't have to.
Read: E-mail innovator pitches self-deleting e-mails
5. The simplicity award: Trello
Simple wins. Sure, there are apps and services and gadgets that do everything. But we are all busy. We are overloaded with multiple ways to do things, options to consider, and other cognitive noise. That's why the most successful products these days strip down the cruft and focus on the elemental experience. I can think of many examples: Sparrow (recently acquired by Google); Path; Instagram; Groupiter (my review). But one Web app -- still relatively unknown -- sticks with me as having a brilliantly simple and fluid interface for what is usually a cluttered and unpleasant thing to deal with: Task management. The app is Trello. I recommend it.
Read: The best lesson from Disrupt: Simplify
6. Most anticipated product (by me): Space Monkey
Sometimes, bizarrely, complicated solutions to simple problems do have a certain elegance. Especially when this complexity leads to increased robustness. Want an example? Evolution.
My favorite example of a complex solution to a simple problem is Space Monkey, an upcoming product that will offer cloud storage with more speed than Dropbox, dramatically better prices, and potentially more data safety -- or so the founders say. How? By creating a mesh of storage access points, with some of the points being hardware that resides on customers' local networks. Intellectually, I love the idea behind this product. I am eager to see if it really delivers.

7. Best thing the government has done for startups: The JOBS Act
For the most part, the U.S. government has kept its hands off the Internet and out of technology. The bigger the tech economy gets, though, the more intervention we get. And sometimes it's actually in the right direction. The JOBS Act makes it easier for startups to raise money from the general public ("crowdfunding"), not just from rich tech investors. I covered the story in some depth and am aware of the imperfections in its new laws, but overall it's a very positive step that could help small teams with creative ideas get them off the ground.
Read: The JOBS Act: 5 things to look forward to
What I'm waiting for now: A legal revolution that really makes sense of patents. Not holding my breath on that one.
8. Government overreach award: California's smartphone sales tax
With tax rules like this, how is it possible California is in the revenue hole it is? Here's what I'm talking about: When you buy a smartphone in this state, even if it's subsidized by the mobile carrier down to zero dollars, you have to pay sales tax for the full retail sales price, a price you cannot negotiate for or control. I had some tax wonks try to explain to me why that's fair, but it still sounds like state-sponsored robbery.
Read: Taxation without negotiation for Calif. smartphone buyers
9. Best bargain app: Pretty much all of them
You have to be insane to pay $50 for a simple utility for OS X, right? The whole operating system costs less than that. But Sharemouse, which just lets you share a keyboard and a mouse between two side-by-side computers, is actually not overpriced, even at $24.95 per computer (and you need at least two licenses for it to work). True, I still won't buy it, but the economics of software are unique. What I was forced to learn after an argument with the creator of this little utility is that software pricing is perfectly elastic: Charge more, you sell fewer licenses. Charge less, sell more. Total sales revenue: Constant. That's just cool.
However, sell more units and you have to support more users, and that gets expensive. Those $1.99 apps we like can kill their publishers. It can actually make better business sense to price some consumers out of your product, even if, as it is with software, the cost of distributing the app to each new user is nearly zero. The sad conclusion, for everyone except for economics professors? Read the story I wrote.
Read: We're not paying enough for apps
Finally,
10. The boy was he wrong award: Rafe Needleman
Right before the iPad came out, in 2009, I wrote what I thought was a logical and realistic treatise on why tablets wouldn't sell. Oops. To make matters worse, I predicted that the CrunchPad (later called the JooJoo, and after that just "the lovely glass serving tray in Rafe's office") could actually sell better than an Apple tablet if it undercut Apple's price by a few hundred bucks.
I am not proud of this prediction. I just hope the arguments I put forth were thought-provoking and entertaining.
I'm also delighted I was wrong, because the iPad is a staggeringly great product. For me, this tablet has changed my relationship with media and games, much for the better. It's also leading yet another revolution in technology design. It's great to watch. And write about. But smartly, next time.
Read: Why consumers won't buy tablets
So thanks, CNET, for a fun ride. Thanks, readers, for reading. It's all a writer wants. For now, I'm outta here.

AZAZ, Syria (Reuters) - The Syrian army turned its forces on Aleppo on Wednesday, ordering an armored column to advance on the country's second biggest city and pounding rebels there with artillery and attack helicopters, opposition activists said.
As hostilities intensified near the Turkish border, Ankara said it was closing its crossing posts, although the United Nations said refugees fleeing Syria would be allowed through.
At the Syrian town of Azaz, a few miles south of the Turkish border, rebels appeared in control after heavy clashes over the past month in which they succeeded in driving out government forces, leaving the place a rubble-strewn ghost-town.
Syria's ambassadors to the United Arab Emirates and Cyprus - a married couple - have deserted their posts, becoming the latest officials to abandon the Damascus government, rebels said.
The 16-month revolt against President Bashar al-Assad has been transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and the capital, Damascus, where fighting exploded last week.
Assad's forces have launched massive counter assaults in both cities. They appear to have beaten rebels back from neighborhoods in the capital and are turning towards Aleppo, a commercial hub in the north.
North of Aleppo, the town of Azaz has been almost completely destroyed by heavy fighting. Burnt-out armored personnel carriers sat on the roads where rebels hit them with rocket-propelled grenades. Bullet casings were scattered everywhere.
Most residents fled during the latest fighting, which drove Assad's forces out over the past month and ended in the rebels taking the Bab al-Salam border crossing with Turkey on Sunday.
Fighting in and around Aleppo is expected to prompt an exodus across the Turkish border, where some Syrian refugees are already complaining about poor conditions and have clashed with riot police in disputes over food.
"There is not enough food. They have broken our hearts, the Turks. Why are they doing this to us?" said a sobbing woman called Umm Omar, with her four children huddled next to her in a camp near the border.
ARTILLERY AND ROCKETS
Further south, Syrian forces used artillery and fired rockets on Wednesday on the northern Damascus suburb of al-Tel in an attempt to seize it from rebels, forcing hundreds of families to flee, residents and opposition activists said.
"Military helicopters are flying now over the town. People were awakened by the sound of explosions and are running away," Rafe Alam, one of the activists, said by phone from a hill overlooking Tel. "Electricity and telephones have been cut off."
Opposition sources also reported helicopters and machineguns were firing on the neighborhood of Hajar al-Aswad. The slum lies on the southern outskirts of the capital and has been a haven for rebels sneaking into Damascus from the suburbs.
In the north, opposition activists said thousands of troops had withdrawn with their tanks and armored vehicles from Idlib province near the Turkish border and were heading towards Aleppo. Rebels attacked the rear of the troops withdrawing from the north, activist Abdelrahman Bakran said from the area.
State-run Syrian television painted a more favorable picture, saying government troops were imposing security and stability in and around Aleppo.
"The terrorists are suffering terrible losses. Groups of them are throwing their weapons away and giving themselves up. Others are fleeing for the Turkish border," the television said.
Military experts believe an overstretched Syrian army is pulling back to concentrate on fighting insurgents in Aleppo and Damascus, important power centers for the government, while leaving outlying areas in the hands of rebels.
HELICOPTERS FIRING
In Aleppo, helicopters were seen firing missiles throughout Tuesday, residents said. Rebels were battling government forces by the gates of the historic old city. Troops fired mortars and shells at rebels armed with rifles and machine guns.
"I heard at least 20 rockets fired, I think from helicopters, and also a lot of machine gun fire," a resident, who gave his name as Omar, said by telephone.
Residents said fixed-wing jets had also flown over the city, followed by loud noises, though there were contradictory reports as to whether they had opened fire. Video footage posted by activists appeared to show a warplane firing its guns.
Assad's forces have occasionally launched air strikes from fixed-wing jets on other cities during the uprising, but tend to rely on helicopters for air strikes in urban areas.
The uprising has entered a more violent phase in the past 10 days since rebels poured into Damascus in large numbers.
Last Wednesday, an explosion killed four members of Assad's inner circle inside a security headquarters, a blow that wiped out much of the top echelon of his military command structure and shattered the reputation for invulnerability that his family has held since his father seized power in a coup in 1970.
Western powers have been calling for Assad to be removed from power for many months, and now say they believe his days are numbered. But they fear that he will fight to the end, raising the risk of sectarian warfare spreading across one of the world's most volatile regions.
Syria heightened the alarm on Monday by confirming that it had chemical and biological weapons and saying it could use them against external threats, prompting warnings from Washington and Moscow against using the arsenal.
In its strongest language yet, Russia told Syria that it was unacceptable to threaten to use chemical weapons, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
In a meeting with Syria's ambassador to Moscow, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov "laid out in an extremely clear form Russia's position on the inadmissibility of any threats of the use of chemical weapons", the ministry said.
Israel said that if Syrian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas used the situation to take control of the weapons, it would "act immediately and with utmost force".
As the revolt against Assad intensifies, top Syrian officials have started to abandon their posts. Syria's ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Abdelatif al-Dabbagh, and his wife, who is Damascus's envoy to Cyprus, Lamia al-Hariri, have defected and are both now in Qatar, the opposition Syrian National Council said on Wednesday.
Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, a member of Assad's inner circle who fled Syria this month, appeared on television in his first public comments since defecting. He called on troops to abandon the government.
Elsewhere in the country, activists reported a series of killings by government troops and pro-Assad militia.
They reported an attack on a mosque in a village northwest of the city of Hama, with at least 15 confirmed dead. At least nine people were killed in army shelling of al-Herak, a town south of Deraa. In Damascus, activists said they found the bodies of 11 men executed by government forces in the district of Qaboun.
The accounts, like others from activists, could not be confirmed. Syria restricts access by international journalists.
The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles reports from activists, said 1,261 people had been killed since the fighting intensified in Damascus on July 15. That made last week by far the bloodiest in an uprising in which activists say at least 18,000 people have been killed.

The BJP's man, Purno Sangma, got the other 30.69 per cent and is still crying foul.
?
None of the North East states voted for Mr Sangma, who, while conceding defeat and wishing Mr Mukherjee success last evening, also alleged that threats, gifts and coercion by the central government had helped Mr Mukherjee's cause. He also said he might rake up the office of profit issue again to challenge Mr Mukherjee's election in court.
?
There are other detractors. Team Anna has said it will begin a fast on Wednesday, the day Mr Mukherjee takes over, with what activist Arvind Kejriwal called a revelation of corruption charges against the President-elect, who was the country's Finance Minister before he resigned last month.
?
Mr Mukherjee has other things on his mind. Like meeting the hundreds of visitors now making a beeline for his residence. He said on Sunday evening as news of his victory came in, "I have received much more from the people, parties, Parliament than I have given them. I will try to justify." (Special Feature: Pranab Mukherjee - From 'village boy to President-elect)
?
Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee reportedly called Mr Mukherjee to congratulate him last evening and confirmed that she would attend the swearing-in ceremony. Ms Banerjee had said last week that she would vote for Mr Mukherjee, but very reluctantly.
Among the many important visitors that he received last evening were Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife. Today, the list of high-profile visitors included Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel, Tariq Anwar and DP Tripathi. NCP chief Sharad Pawar is in Delhi to decide on whether his party will continue to participate in the UPA government. The NCP duly waited till the Presidential elections were over before it went public with its sulk. (Read: Key NCP meet today)
?
BSP chief Mayawati visited and said, "I have come to congratulate him and I had said this earlier that for the President's post, he is capable and well-accomplished. I am confident that he will fulfill his responsibility with dignity, honesty and abide by the constitution."
The returning officer for the presidential election and Rajya Sabha Secretary General V K Agnihotri will send a copy of the result and the victory certificate to the Law Ministry to enable the government initiate the process of installing the new President. A similar copy will be sent to the Election Commission.
?
On Wednesday morning, Mr Mukherjee will be escorted by the President's Military Secretary to Rashtrapati Bhavan. From there President Pratibha Patil and Mr Mukherjee will leave in a ceremonial cavalcade for the swearing-in ceremony. The short route will be lined with soldiers. He will take oath in the Central Hall of Parliament. The Chief Justice of India will administer the oath of office.
Soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Mr Mukherjee will go to Rashtrapati Bhavan where he will be received at the forecourts by outgoing President. Mr Mukherjee will then escort Ms Patil to her temporary accommodation in Tughlak Lane where she will stay till her post-retirement home in Pune is ready. (Five little-known facts about Pranab Mukherjee)
?
Up ahead lie tough tasks for Mr Mukherjee. There are more than 10 petitions sent by prisoners on death row to the President's office, asking for clemency. Among them, that of Afzal Guru, convicted for a terror attack on Parliament in 2001, a brazen assault in which 12 people were killed when Parliament was in session. The new President will have to decide what becomes of these mercy petitions, some of which have major political ramifications. For example, Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is in jail in Punjab for the assassination of former chief minister Beant Singh, is treated as a martyr and paid lavish tribute by the Sikh clergy.
The President is also likely to have a huge imprint on the political future of the country in 2014, when the general elections are expected to yield a hung Parliament. The President could then have a casting vote to decide who should come to power. He also has the right to dissolve a deeply-fractured Parliament, if that's what the results deliver.

In today?s digital marketing age, more and more retail stores are building ecommerce websites. An ecommerce site enables any size retailer in any place of the world to have a global market reach. When promoted effectively, an ecommerce site can also offer immense cost-efficiency for customer acquisition and product sales.
Parallel to the enormous growth in ecommerce, most industries and product sectors are being dominated by a few major ecommerce giants. These powerful players often have a prominent brand image accompanied by targeted search engine ads and wealthy online marketing budgets. This has made competing against such ecommerce sites a difficult endeavor, especially for small e-retailers with limit ad spend.
In sectors where it might seem impossible to steal market share from ecommerce goliaths, there is usually always a way to capture a good chunk of customers. The trick is to get the creative juices flowing and find out which channels are the most relevant, least competitive, and cost-efficient. Below we highlight three tips that can help small business ecommerce sites compete with big budget brands.
Carve a Fine Niche

There is no doubt in my mind Nassau County desperately needs to build a new Coliseum and convention center to help retain the Islanders and create a viable outlet for residents to see sporting events, concerts and attend trade shows.
The last time this was up for discussion, the public overwhelmingly rejected it, not because it was a bad idea, but because Nassau lacked a responsible, sustainable way to fund the project.
Here, then, are some alternatives to help finance construction, many of which have not yet been discussed.
The average cost and length of a naming rights contract to a stadium in the United States are $2.9 million per year for a term of about 19 years. Naming rights to a convention center should go for about $1 million per year. Assuming that a new coliseum would command a premium because Nassau is more densely populated with a higher average income than just about anywhere else, it is safe to say the combined stadium and convention center naming rights are worth at least $6 million per year. Split this with a developer, and Nassau has a $3 million annuity to pay off any bonds.
The Broadway show, ?The Producers,? was one of the first entertainment vehicles to charge premium pricing on tickets to capture money that was being lost to scalpers. While the Islanders won?t command seat-licensing revenue like the Jets and Giants recently did, I believe there is a market for a yearly surcharge for premium seating. Charging $1,500 per seat for the year for the first right to purchase tickets on 10 percent of the roughly 17,000 seats in a new arena would create an annuity of $2.5 million per year. Outside of hockey season (I wouldn?t offer this for hockey tickets because that should be up to Mr. Wang) there are roughly 100 events a year, and this would equate to a $15 per-event premium for the best tickets that are already going to many ticket agents.
The previous referendum and proposed contract had given Nassau the rights to use the Coliseum for several days. If the county had the rights to 10 days it could sublease them or create its own annual event such as an opening season Big East basketball tournament. The going rental rate for a state-of-the-art facility is about $100,000 per event. This could generate about $1 million per year.
The Democratic Party leader in a recent LIBN article suggested a ticket tax. While nobody likes to pay a tax, I agree a $3 ?fee? could be added to the roughly 1.5 million people (assuming an average of 10,000 people per event) attending the 150 events the new arena would have per year. This would generate about $4.5 million per year.
Finally, I recommend floating $20 million in Tax Increment Financing Bonds. TIF bonds are paid back with income from new real estate taxes generated by a construction project. About $1 million a year in new real estate taxes would need to be generated to finance these bonds to retire them over 30 years. With a new and larger project being built, I don?t think the incremental new tax revenue would be difficult to reach. Such a bond would create a new revenue stream that would not conflict with other government agency budgets.
None of the aforementioned ideas include tax hikes. Instead, they conservatively raise over $10 million in yearly revenue and include $20 million in direct financing. I believe these ideas could be used in conjunction with any development project to make it financially feasible.
The local economy desperately needs this project for financial reasons, and it is equally important for Nassau County?s morale. I hope both sides of the aisle get together soon to do something, so we can finally put a shovel in the ground.

Curtis Martin: Martin's toughness showed well before he suited up as an NFL player. Growing up in the rugged Homewood section of Pittsburgh, he estimated that over 30 of his friends and families died in violent crimes. This included his grandmother, who he found stabbed to death after a robbery. ?
His NFL accomplishments speak for themselves, and it's no surprise that he was selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame quickly when his eligibility came up. Only a bone-on-bone condition in his knee ended his career, and he even tried to play through that. Martin isn't only one of the toughest Jets of all-time, but one of the NFL's toughest players during his era.
?
Shaun Ellis: It can be argued that during Ellis' career as a Jet, the franchise enjoyed it's most sustained run of success. It's no coincidence that it came while Ellis was anchoring the defensive line. Ellis' 72.5 sacks ranks second to Mark Gastineau on the all-time Jets list, and that doesn't take into account the rest of the dirty work he did along the defensive line.
?
Jason Fabini: At 6'4", 310 pounds, Fabini was a giant on the offensive line for the Jets for eight seasons. Always considered one of the strongest players on the team, Fabini started his career at left tackle, but was moved to the right side to protect the blindside of Vinny Testaverde and Chad Pennington.?
?
Kevin Mawae: In a 2009 Sports Illustrated?poll, Mawae was voted one of the five dirtiest players in the NFL. He absolutely loved that. Mawae was the NFL's dominant center for a solid decade and made the Pro Bowl in each of his seven full seasons as a Jet. Mawae had a nasty streak as a pass-blocker, but what made him even more dangerous was his mobility. Mawae had the rare ability to work as a pulling center and often surprised defenders as he got out ahead of the attack. And by "surprised defenders," I mean knocked them clear out of their uniform with devastating blocks. ?
?
Laveranues Coles:?Regardless of position or size, Coles was one of the toughest players to take the field for the Jets during the recent era. Standing just 5'11", Coles was drafted as a burner, but developed into a fearless possession receiver who was never scared to take a hit.?
Coles was also recognized by the NFL as a recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award after the 2007 season and gained a ton of notoriety and respect when he admitted that he was the victim of sexual abuse as a youngster.

The work of once controversial and now revered Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt are celebrated on Google?s homepage today, in honor of his 150th birthday. Born in 1862 near Vienna, in Baumgarten, Klimt reveled in human sexuality and eventually led the Secession movement in Austria. His use of eroticism and provoking sexual imagery challenged the safe, predictable tradition of Austrian art.
Today, Klimt?s most famous work, The Kiss, overlays the Google logo on the homepage. A masterful piece of oil and goldleaf on canvas, The Kiss features a couple experts believe to be the artist himself and longtime love Emilie Fl?ge, in a passionate embrace. Clicking on the image leads to a search results page for Gustav Klimt.
Interestingly, the original painting is square; Google has built the image out to a rectangular shape, carrying the lines of the grass and flowers, as well as the background, onto a secondary ?canvas.? This is where the Google logo appears, with part of the second ?o? and the entire second ?g? in Google obscured by an image now considered tame, though it was wildly provocative at the time. The entire piece is held within a mock wooden frame.
Raised in poverty alongside his six brothers and sisters, Gustav was one of three sons with noticeable artistic talent. In 1876, he was awarded a scholarship to Kunstgewerbeschule, the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he would study architectural painting alongside his brother Ernst, who enrolled in 1877.
Born the son of an immigrant goldsmith, Klimt was skilled in engraving and also graced with coming of age in the cultural flowering of Vienna, then the fourth-largest city in all of Europe. It was the ideal environment in which to experiment, push the limits, and hone his craft.
Students Gustav and Ernst Klimt, with protege Franz Matsch, launched a team called the Company of Artists, first assisting their teacher paint murals in Vienna?s Kunsthistorisches Museum, then accepting commissioned works as a group. Early in his career as a professional painter, Klimt?s greatest bodies of work were murals and ceiling artscapes in the large public buildings on the Ringstrasse, the circular road around Vienna?s Innere Stadt district.
Even in earlier pieces, Klimt never seemed a novice. In the period spanning 1886-1888, he worked on the Burgtheater alongside his team, tasked with creating scenes from the theater?s history on stairway ceilings and the tympanum. In his early twenties at the time, he showcased superior technical skills and a passion for near-photographic portrait work, such as in The Theater in Taormina. On completion of his work in the Burgtheater, Klimt was awarded the Golden Order of Merit by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I.
Personal circumstance, driven by love and tragedy, worked to shape his unique perspective and artistic evolution in his thirties and forties.
Klimt met Emilie Fl?ge?when she was 18. In 1891, his brother Ernst had married Fl?ge?s younger sister, Helene. The following year, both his father and brother Ernst died, requiring that Klimt, at thirty years old, take over financially supporting both families. He was made Helene?s legal guardian and became familiar with Emilie through much time spent with the family.
Fl?ge would eventually become a noted couturi?re in her own right. She and Klimt hung with Vienna?s trendy Bohemian and fin de si?cle crowd; that members of Vienna?s elite upper crust were often the subject of Klimt?s portraits opened doors for Fl?ge, as an haute couture designer.
They would never marry, though she remained his partner the rest of his life. In 1902, Klimt painted a portrait of Fl?ge, fully dressed; it was just one of the works reportedly inspired by his companion.
Avenue in the Park of Schloss Kammer, 1912
Klimt completed The Kiss, displayed on the Google homepage today, in 1908. It was one of his many sensual portrayals of women and an example of the oil and gold leaf on canvas technique used in a number of his works. It is also believed to be a self-portrait, featuring Klimt and Fl?ge themselves as lovers.
Though many consider Klimt one of the most influential artists of his time, author and journalist Dr. Frank Whitford famously panned that notion when speaking on BBC TV documentary, The Kiss: Private Life of a Masterpiece. ?Klimt of course, is an important artist - he's a very popular artist - but in terms of the history of art, he's a very unimportant artist,? said Whitford. ?Although he sums up so much in his work, about the society in which he found himself - in art historical terms, his effect was negligible. So he's an artist, really, in a cul-de-sac.?
Klimt?s work is considered to have evolved greatly during and just after his work on The Kiss; even in 1908, as The Kiss came out, his art took on a more blatantly sexual, erotic tone, as in Danae.
Says A World History of Art?s description?of Danae (circa 1907-1908):
After The Kiss, Klimt became less willing to conceal: this is the ecstasy of love, at the very moment when the shower of gold pieces mingled with gilded spermatozoa - the form in which Zeus chooses to ?visit? the sleeping heroine, symbol of carnal and sensual beauty - pours down between her gigantic thighs.?
It may be more accurate to say society, rather than Klimt, had evolved by the time he released Danae. Klimt had earlier been forced to remove from the first Secession movement exhibition a painting that pushed the boundaries too far for 1903 Vienna.
Hope I, an oil on canvas nude portrait of a pregnant woman with her pubic hair on display, was considered far too controversial at the time. In 1970, Hope I was acquired by the National Gallery of Canada, where it now resides.
Of Hope I, the gallery writes, ?In this richly symbolic painting, Klimt juxtaposes the promise of new life with the destructive forces of death. Despite the monstrosities around her, the pregnant woman remains calm and unperturbed, confident of the renewal within her. In preliminary sketches for this painting the tone is more positive: the sketches show a couple within a landscape reflecting upon their happiness. Klimt's decision to change the composition may have stemmed from his reaction to the death of his second son during infancy in 1902.?
Throughout his career, Klimt?s greatest subject was the female body, whether in oil paintings, sketches, murals, or other art pieces.

From 1908 to 1914, Klimt himself supervised the publication of Das Werk Gustav Klimts, the only folio set produced in his lifetime. Emporer Franz Joseph I was first to purchase Das Werk Gustav Klimts, consisting of fifty images depicting his most important paintings, reproduced using collotype lithography. F?nfundzwanzig Handzeichnungen and Gustav Klimt An Aftermath were released posthumously, in 1919 and 1931, respectively.
Klimt is often historically associated with his Austrian contemporary Sigmund Freud, who also worked diligently in that era to publicly push sexual boundaries. The artist of The Kiss is also believed to have fathered 14 to 17 illegitimate children?before his death by stroke, during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. Many of the women with whom he had affairs are believed to have been featured in his portraits.
His most ambitious work, the Beethoven Frieze, is on permanent display in the Vienna Secession Building, where a sex club was fittingly invited to hold orgies?alongside Klimt?s sexually charged work in 2010.
Considering some of Klimt?s more erotic pieces, it seems as though Google played it safe by featuring one of the tamer, yet more popular, of his paintings, in celebration of a man who loved to see how far he could push the sensibilities of modern society.
Google has featured the works of other artists in Google doodles on the homepage recently, including:
