China frees Yahoo! dissident after 10 years

A Chinese dissident convicted of subversion based on evidence provided by US Internet giant Yahoo! was released from prison on Friday after serving a 10-year term, his wife said.

Wang Xiaoning, 62, became a cause celebre after a Beijing court named Yahoo Holdings (Hong Kong) as the source of evidence that led to his 2003 conviction, in a public relations disaster for the company.

Wang was released from prison in the early hours of Friday "in a good mental and physical state", his wife Yu Ling told AFP.

Yu said she had "stayed up half the night" in a police station waiting for her husband, after police visited her house to inform her of his release.

"I'm really happy my husband is home," she told AFP, speaking by telephone from the couple's home in Beijing, where she said her husband was resting after his release.

She added that Wang should never have served a prison sentence for distributing essays that advocated democratic reform and criticised China's one-party Communist rule using his Yahoo! email account.

"He didn't commit any crime," Yu said. "He just expressed his own opinions."

Yahoo! executives who testified before US Congress said they were legally obliged to divulge information about their users to the Chinese government and that they were unaware it would be used to convict dissidents.

The company also provided evidence in the case of poet and activist Shi Tao, who was sentenced to 10 years for leaking state secrets in 2005 after he sent an email overseas containing information on a crackdown on democracy advocates.

Yahoo! later apologised and in 2007 paid compensation to Wang's wife after the World Organization for Human Rights lodged a lawsuit that also named Shi.

Chinese authorities will suspend Wang's political rights for two more years and "may continue to place restrictions" on him, Yu said, without giving specifics. Wang was not available for interview.

Yu refused to say how much money Yahoo! paid in compensation, but said she was impressed with the US Congress and court system during her visit to the United States in 2007 as part of the lawsuit.

Debt to Income Ratio too High? Auto Loan ... - Find My Way Home

Debt to income auto loanYour debt to income ratio is what determines how much you qualify for when applying for a home loan.

If you find yourself butting up against the ceiling of your DTI (debt to income), you might not want to give up yet.

Reducing Debt

The debt portion of a debt to income ratio is what is reported on your credit report. ?Being as familiar as I am with credit reporting, I know that there?s a good chance that it?s not completely 100% accurate.

check your credit report for accuracy

The first thing you should do is check your credit report to make sure there are no closed accounts or old collection/charge offs still reporting a payment. ?It is not at all uncommon for closed accounts to still show a payment due.

Auto Loan Solution

Auto loans can be an opportunity to reduce your debt to income ratio very quickly.

When you finance an automobile for 36 or 60 months, that financing is called an installment loan.

Here is the guideline per Fannie Mae Underwriting Guidelines:

?All installment debt that is not secured by a financial asset?including student loans, automobile loans, and home equity loans?must be considered part of the borrower?s recurring monthly debt obligations if there are more than ten monthly payments remaining.?

?under 10 months left not considered

As is typical with most underwriting guidelines, it?s what they?didn?t say?that you have to pay attention to. ?What this guideline also says is that installment debt with less than ten monthly payments do not need to be considered.

If you currently have less than 10 months left on your auto loan, make sure your lender is excluding this payment from your debt to income ratio.

Pro Tip: ?Reduce principle to reduce pay off

If you have more than 10 months left on your auto loan, you still have options. ?You can pay down the principle balance of the loan.

Here?s how it works: ?

  • Say your payment is $200 a month and you have a balance of $2,800
  • Your $200 payment for 10 months is $2,000.
  • To eliminate the $200 payment from your DTI, you would make a principle payment of $800.
  • Once you?ve made the payment, ask the auto dealer to produce a current statement showing the new principle balance.

Before paying your auto loan down, review the scenario with your loan officer. ?Guidelines can change at any time and lenders can over-lay more restrictive guidelines.

There are many opportunities to reduce your debt to income ratio. ?This is one way it can be done.

Cuba campaign takes on 'free' health care

HAVANA (AP) ? Cuba's system of free medical care, long considered a birthright by its citizens and trumpeted as one of the communist government's great successes, is not immune to cutbacks under Raul Castro's drive for efficiency.

The health sector has already endured millions of dollars in budget cuts and tens of thousands of layoffs, and it became clear this month that Castro is looking for more ways to save when the newspaper voice of the Communist Party, Granma, published daily details for two weeks on how much the government spends on everything from anesthetics and acupuncture to orthodontics and organ transplants.

It's part of a wider media campaign that seems geared to discourage frivolous use of medical services, to explain or blunt fears of a drop-off in care and to remind Cubans to be grateful that health care is still free despite persistent economic woes. But it's also raising the eyebrows of outside analysts, who predict further cuts or significant changes to what has been a pillar of the socialist system implanted after the 1959 revolution.

"Very often the media has been a leading indicator of where the economic reforms are going," said Phil Peters, a longtime Cuba observer at the Lexington Institute think tank. "My guess is that there's some kind of policy statement to follow, because that's been the pattern."

The theme of the Granma pieces, posters in clinics and ads on state TV is the same: "Your health care is free, but how much does it cost?"

The answer is, not much by outside standards, but quite a bit for Cuba, which spends $190 million a year paying for its citizens' medical bills.

Based on the official exchange rate, the government spends $2 each time a Cuban visits a family doctor, $4.14 for each X-ray and $6,827 for a heart transplant.

It's not a luxury service though. Scarcities now are common and sanitary conditions fall short of the ideal in decaying facilities where paint peels from the walls. Patients often bring their own bed sheets, electric fans, food and water for hospital stays.

One Havana-based clinical physician applauded the campaign, saying it targets a pervasive problem: Conditioned to think about health as an inalienable right, many Cubans rush to the hospital whenever they come down with a cough or the sniffles, demand expensive tests before they've even been examined and sometimes get aggressive if doctors refuse.

"Respect for doctors has entirely been lost," he said. "Some will indulge a patient for fear of how they might react."

The physician spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss health care with a foreign journalist. Interview requests were not granted by the Health Ministry, though a spokeswoman said in a brief email response that the costs in Granma were the result of careful study.

The fact that the figures were published at all suggests a sea change in conceptions about health care, said Nancy Burke, director of the Cuba Program in Health Diplomacy at the University of California, San Francisco.

"It's interesting that the health care system, which has always been touted as a basic human right, is now being put into market terms," said Burke, a medical anthropologist who makes yearly research trips to Cuba. "That says so much about Raul's market reforms and the ideology ... informing that. It's a real shift, a major shift in the way of thinking about health care."

She noted that the island's doctors are increasingly cash cows for Cuba as it sends them abroad to treat the poor in countries such as Venezuela. The international missions fulfill a humanitarian purpose but also offset a significant share of the $28.5 billion in cash and subsidized oil that the South American nation has sent Cuba since 2005, according to Venezuelan opposition lawmaker Julio Borges, who says he uses public records to track the figure.

To cut costs in Cuba, state media have urged doctors to use their "clinical eye" before ordering pricey lab tests, and target the practice of people stockpiling medicine to carry them through shortages.

In one TV spot, a woman visits a doctor and requests a long list of pills. Asked why she needs so many, she replies: "Oh, doctor, it's for my personal stash."

"I stop cold when I see that, not knowing whether to laugh or cry," blogger Greter Torres Vazquez wrote on a Cuban youth-issues website. "Maybe they've never had the experience of going to the pharmacy and asking for medicine that their aunt, their grandmother, their mother needs urgently, only for the worker to say 'Sorry, we ran out five minutes ago.'"

Some seized on the campaign to complain about corruption in hospitals.

"They should also publish the miserable salary that doctors get paid; that's an embarrassment," said Maria Soto, a 62-year-old Havana resident. "And it's serious, because it leads to the problems everyone knows about: You get bad service or, even worse, they charge you under the table."

Cuban authorities continuously brag about keeping health care free and universal despite its lightweight economy and the 50-year-old U.S. embargo.

Experts credit the government's emphasis on prevention and doctor-patient relationships for life expectancy and infant mortality rates that are on par with those of wealthy nations. Medical schools churn out huge graduating classes; every last one of Cuba's 11 million citizens is supposed to get a house call at least once a year.

Charging for care would be a dramatic and unlikely about-face, but with 15 percent of the budget devoted to health, Havana sees no choice but to make the system more efficient wherever it can.

After steadily rising over five decades to hit $206 million in 2009, health spending has dropped, slipping to $190 million last year, according to government figures. Officials hint at more cuts to come.

These days, authorities rail against "irrational expenses" and have slashed more than 50,000 less-skilled health-sector jobs, singling out overstaffed clinics and ambulances with multiple drivers.

Some Cubans say hospital wait times seem to be on the rise and medicine, equipment and soap are increasingly in short supply.

The clinical doctor consulted by the AP said neither scarcity nor complaints have worsened, though doctors still suffer heavy case loads and low pay, about $25 a month.

Cuba is walking a delicate line on health: Too much change could be seen in some camps as a betrayal of the socialist contract. Too little may not ease the burden on a strained economy, said Sergio Diaz-Briquets, a U.S.-based demographer and author of "The Health Revolution in Cuba.

"It is maybe a universal phenomenon that health care systems are expensive," he said, "but Cuba perhaps cannot afford to have the kind of services that they claim to have had in the past."

Grizzly bear kills hiker in Denali National Park

(AP) ? Denali National Park officials say a hiker photographed an Alaska grizzly for at least eight minutes before the bear mauled and killed him.

Denali Park Superintendent Paul Anderson said Saturday it's the first fatal attack in the park's history. Investigators have recovered the camera and looked at the photographs, which show the bear grazing and not acting aggressively before the attack Friday afternoon.

The photos show the hiker walked within 50 feet of the bear, far less than the quarter-mile buffer required by park rules. Investigators confirmed that the hiker had received safety training and would have known the rule.

Investigators have identified the man but won't release his name until they've notified his next of kin. Officials said he's a U.S. citizen but declined to release any other information about him.

Nanoparticles added to platelets double internal injury survival rate: Early lab study hold promise for trauma cases

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Naonparticles tailored to latch onto blood platelets rapidly create healthy clots and nearly double the survival rate in the vital first hour after injury, new research shows.

"We knew an injection of these nanoparticles stopped bleeding faster, but now we know the bleeding is stopped in time to increase survival following trauma," said Erin Lavik, a professor of biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University and leader of the effort.

The researchers are developing synthetic platelets that first responders and battlefield medics could carry with them to stabilize car crash or roadside bomb victims. An injection could slow or halt internal bleeding until the victim reaches a hospital and receives blood transfusions and surgery.

Lavik spoke about the latest breakthroughs in her research August 20 at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting in Philadelphia.

Lavik and her colleagues began focusing on synthetic platelets after learning the military has no equivalent of a tourniquet, pressure dressing or other easily transportable technology to stem bleeding from internal injuries.

But as they explored possible applications, they recognized that the approach is widely needed beyond military conflict. Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for people age 4 to 44, often overwhelming the body's natural blood-clotting process.

The platelet-like nanoparticles are made of biodegradable polymers used in devices already approved by the Food & Drug Administration for use in humans. They're designed to hone in on injuries after injection. Natural platelets, activated by injury, emit chemicals that bind natural platelets and the additional synthetics into a larger clot faster than natural platelets alone.

Tested on a lethal liver injury model in lab rats, the one-hour survival rate of the models injected with the nanoparticles was 80 percent. For control groups treated with saline alone the survival rate fell to 47 percent, while control groups receiving scrambled nanoparticles totaled just 40 percent. Among the three, the models treated with the platelet-like nanoparticles exhibited the least blood loss.

The researchers also found that the hybrid clots were as firm as natural clots. In additional testing, they found no complications following administration of the nanoparticles.

Earlier tests showed these synthetic platelets can cut bleeding time by as much as half and that, a week later, the rats showed no ill effects from the materials

The researchers include graduate students Andrew J. Shoffstall, Lydia M. Everhart and Margaret M. Lashof-Sullivan; research assistants Kristyn T. Atkins and Rebecca E. Groynom; undergraduate student Matt E. Varley; and administrative assistant Blaine Martin-Dow, all of Case Western Reserve. They are teamed with Robert S. Butler, of the Department of Quantitative Health Services at the Cleveland Clinic, and Jeffrey S. Ustin, assistant professor, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and member of the Department of General Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

They are continuing to test the platelets with other models of injury, working toward the best design and dosage for human use.

Simple methods such as writing it on your to do list or marking an X on a calendar can help you maintain the budget for the first month.

How to Create a Budget ? After

After each month, set aside an hour or two to go over the previous month?s figures. Review and ask yourself questions like:

  • What are my fixed expenses?groceries, living, insurance??
  • What were my discretionary expenses?eating out, entertainment??
  • What expenses provided no value?
  • What expenses provided value?
  • Where my projections accurate? What categories were way to high or low?
  • Are there any goals I can set for next month?

Making a budget can be your key to your financial turnaround. If you spend a majority of your life producing income, why not spend a few minutes deciding on what the income is used for.

HP creates Mobility division to focus on consumer tablets, taps ex-MeeGo maven Alberto Torres to run it

HP creating Mobility division to focus on consumer tablets, taps exMeeGo maven Alberto Torres to run itDespite the culling of Palm's offerings from its product portfolio, HP isn't exiting the tablet space. Far from it. Evidence of a new tablet has been floating around since April, and we've even caught a couple glimpses of the so-called Slate 8. Now, The Verge reports that the company has created a Mobility unit within the Personal Systems Group dedicated to making such consumer hardware. According to a leaked internal memo, it looks like Alberto Torres, formerly chief of MeeGo ops at Nokia, will be the man in charge of the new division. The Mobility group will first focus on tablets, with a "soon-to-be-launched" initial offering, but it plans to expand into other product segments moving forward. The full leaked memo can be found at the source below.

Nutrient-boosted foods protect against blindness

Editorial: "Nutrient-boosted Golden Rice should be embraced"

THERE'S a new weapon in the battle against blindness, and it's bright orange. A sweet potato bred naturally to contain loads more beta carotene than its traditional counterparts has helped stave off vitamin A deficiency in thousands of Ugandans. The announcement comes as other results confirm that beta-carotene-packed genetically modified rice can also boost dietary vitamin A effectively. Beta carotene is converted into vitamin A in the body.

About half a million children in Africa and Asia go blind every year because their diet contains too little vitamin A, which is vital for vision and the immune system. Of those who lose their sight, two-thirds die within months.

Aid agencies currently treat the deficiency by giving children high-dose capsules of vitamin A twice a year, but supplying the missing vitamin through locally grown food would be more practical and sustainable.

Enter the sweet potato. The orange flesh of a standard sweet potato betrays its beta-carotene content - the same stuff responsible for the carrot's hue. The new strain has four to six times the beta-carotene of an average sweet potato.

A two-year project involving 10,000 households in Uganda found that vitamin A intake doubled in women and in children aged 6 to 35 months who ate the improved sweet potatoes compared with families that continued eating regular varieties. By the end of the project almost 90 per cent of the kids eating the new strain had escaped vitamin A deficiency, compared with just 50 per cent in a control group.

"There's great potential for these potatoes," says Christine Hotz of the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington DC, who headed the Ugandan project (Journal of Nutrition, DOI: 10.3945/jn.111.151829).

More controversial than the naturally bred sweet potatoes is Golden Rice - genetically engineered to contain 30 micrograms of beta-carotene per gram. Ordinary rice has none.

Critics had claimed that the rice is impractical. According to calculations by Greenpeace, people would need to eat huge amounts - as much as 18 kilograms of cooked rice a day - to obtain enough vitamin A.

A study involving 68 Chinese children demolishes the criticism. Guangwen Tang of Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues have demonstrated that just 100 to 150 grams of the rice - about half the children's daily intake - provided 60 per cent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A.

The children were given beta-carotene either in the rice, in pure form in oil, or in spinach. All the beta carotene they received contained isotopes enabling any vitamin A made from it to be distinguished from vitamin A that was already circulating in their blood.

Analyses showed that it took 2.3 grams of beta-carotene derived from rice to make a single gram of vitamin A - only marginally less efficient than making it from oil, which took 2 grams (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, DOI: 10.3945/ajcn.111.030775).

"The conversion rate can't get better than that," says Adrian Dubock, project manager for the Golden Rice Project. He hopes that Golden Rice will eventually become widely available, despite objections. "It's been a long haul, but the new results give us confidence we're on the right track," he says.

Apple set-top-box rumored to provide DVR-like TV on demand, iPad-like interface, social networking

Apple set-top-box rumored to provide DVR-like TV on demand, iPad-like interface, social networking

Yet more rumors are surfacing about Apple's plans for a set-top box that would provide access not only to traditional iTunes content, but traditional TV content as well. Interestingly, for the second day in a row, the report comes by way of the Wall Street Journal's Jessica E. Vascellaro and Sam Schechner:

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company proposes giving viewers the ability to start any show at any time through a digital-video recorder that would store TV shows on the Internet. Viewers even could start a show minutes after it has begun. Time Warner Cable Inc. TWC -0.25% offers a limited version of this feature called Start Over.

In addition to the cable operators the WSJ mentioned yesterday, they now say Apple is also approaching entertainment companies directly, with outlines of the rumored device's rumored capabilities. These are reportedly a simplified, iconic interface akin to that on the iPad (or, um, Apple TV?), the ability to engage in social networking on-screen, and, of course, support for existing Apple technologies like AirPlay.

Some of the features Apple has discussed are improvements, but not radical changes, to those already available. For instance, Apple wants viewers to be able to access all episodes of current seasons of TV shows, whereas existing video on demand services from cable operators generally often offer only a few episodes of a current season. Apple's proposed device would also provide access to older seasons of shows, which are already available through Apple's iTunes media store.

The WSJ points out, again, that this is a departure from Apple's previous strategy, which amounted to an end run around cable companies, similar to the end-run around record stores Apple pulled off with iTunes music. In both cases entrenched brokers controlled the supply of content, but while record stores were brick and mortar businesses, cable operators literally own the pipes that bring content to our doorsteps and into our living rooms. They also have agreements in place that aren't so easily worked around...

Again, however, two reports in the WSJ on two consecutive days is interesting. Or positioning. Why now, when there's already a plethora of Apple product rumors concerning the iPhone 5, iPad mini and the rest of the iOS device line up ahead of the rumored September 12? Why the repeated references to changed strategies and cable-engagement? Why....? /Plinkket

Given Apple keeps the, by their standards low-selling, Apple TV "hobby" on the market is evidence of how serious Apple is about the living room. These rumors are likely indicators of how serious they continue to be. We'll still have to wait and see what, if anything, actually emerged by way of an Apple DVR.

But as I've said numerous times, my cable company's terrible Scientific Atlanta box hasn't been updated in a decade. It's in desperate need of innovation -- of revolution -- and if Apple can do it, I'll throw money at them in a heartbeat.

How about you?

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Penny ...

Many stocks are at record low costs and are ready for the picking, making it one of the very finest times to speculate in decades. With the recession practically now formally over and grinding down to a halt, the recovery period is starting. In particular, here is the easy way to treble your investments overnite with an automatic stock trading methodology. To set apart between which stocks have fully bottomed out and which continue to fall, you ought to use an automatic stock market dealing system which is especially built to use deductive, algorithmic tools to decode market info and find worthwhile trading possibilities. Learn as much as is possible about the exchange before making any investments. Make smaller goals initially, then work up to more aspiring goals. An ignorant financier risks losing precious money and frittering away time. If you're greedy and unacceptably aspiring at the start, you'll likely be disappointed in your results.

You now do not have to get obsessed about the newest market reports.

Newb stock market trading may be an enjoyable experience for you, if you do not forget to learn all that you can about the stock exchange before you invest. No more hard forecasting about which shares to get and a lot less mistakes of which can often be reasonably expensive. Blend this with the best securities trading system and you have got an extraordinary investment tool at your command. The system itself will tell you which stocks are ?winners? primarily based on its careful research into the market. These programs only target penny shares and deliver literally the most successful stock picks to be found in the market because penny shares have a name of incredibly jumping in worth in an exceedingly short term due to their less expensive costs leave them open to more trading influence from the outside. I like to say that penny stocks and shares and stock-trading robots were made for one another, and it's simply for this very reason like it can demarcate the good picks from the bad, you can make a lot of cash in the near term. Look for a full refund guarantee because this is both an indication of good faith from the publisher and proof that they are pushing a credible programme, but also simultaneously you can test the programme first hand before absolutely committing to it. It?s simple enough to do because you do not have to invest any cash, instead you can doublecheck the performances of the picks which it generates for you in the market to find out how well they do so you can know irrespective of whether you should be making an investment in its next string of picks.

Why focus on Gabby Douglas' hair? | WTKR.com ? Hampton Roads ...

Many African-Americans watching Douglas shared a flush of pride at the accomplishment, noting her joy, her poise, her grace and, apparently, her hairstyle.

I heard about this latter preoccupation from my sister, who swept into town for a weekend visit and opened with, ?Have you heard that mess about Gabby?s hair? Type in ?Gabby Douglas hair? on Google; you?ll see.? I was dismayed to find a string of posts by African-American women and men debating Douglas? hairstyle and the perceived imperfection that while her hair was straightened, parts of it had turned visibly kinky during her performance.

Twitter and Facebook commenters and callers on black talk radio shows questioned whether her hair was too straight or too kinky, whether it was over-gelled or under-tamed, and what she should have done with that floppy bun. My sister, who thought this barrage of criticism was ?mess,? threw in the final comment: ?All right, I admit if I was her mother, I would have put a headband on the girl, but really, who cares??

A significant number of people, if the list my Google search returned is any indication. Why were some African-Americans fixated on hair at a moment that should have been set aside to savor a grand achievement?

For African-Americans and black women in particular, hair has long been troubled terrain. The natural kinkiness or curliness of most black people?s hair places it outside the bounds of mainstream American beauty standards, which emphasizes straightness, length and the bounce and flow of tresses in motion.

Historically, the difference of black hair texture has symbolized the inferiority of black people in the minds of some whites and even some blacks.

Naturally kinky hair was viewed as dirty, unkempt and unattractive into the mid-20th century.

In the 1960s and later, as blacks began to reclaim natural styles, Afros, braids and dreadlocks were associated with political radicalism in dominant American culture to the extent that some black women were threatened with the loss of their jobs for wearing braids to the workplace.

Over the years, black women (and men) have turned to numerous products and processes in an attempt to tame their locks into looks more fitting for American society ? from twists and ties to pomades and gels to straightening combs and chemical relaxers.

It is no wonder that the first African-American female millionaire, Madame C. J. Walker, earned her riches from selling hair lotions and perfecting the use of the straightening comb.

For African-Americans, smooth, straight hair has been a symbol not only of beauty but of acceptance in broader American culture. And while black women wear their hair in myriad creative ways, one underlying orientation from this cultural history of hair oppression remains: the view that a black woman?s hairstyle is important and even symbolic, so she had better get it right. This is in part why Angela Davis? Afro became iconic, why Beyonc??s blond tresses are a signature of her look and why Nicki Minaj made a splash with a twirling carousel of cotton-candy colored wigs.

African-American women feel that we have to ?represent? through physical appearance. We know that when we step outside our doors, people do not only see and judge us as individuals, they see and judge our entire community and racial group.

For our own self-esteem and for the dignity of our group, we strive to appear our best. And to do so, we have often tried to replicate the aesthetic values of mainstream American society ? including straight hair.

These acts of replication have been internalized such that we often do not distinguish between mainstream standards of beauty and what might have traditionally been our own way of looking at and loving ourselves.

The public reaction to Douglas? appearance shows that this preoccupation with hair in the black community has gone too far.

After her stunning win, tweeters who publicly demanded ?why hasn?t anyone tried to fix Gabby Douglas? hair?? and charged ?Gabby?Douglas gotta do something with this hair!? distracted the nation?s attention from what really mattered in the moment.

Defenses of Douglas posted by black women emphasized salient points: that she was an athlete who necessarily worked up a sweat, that sweat naturally affected one?s hair and that she had just accomplished something none of the ?haters? could even dream of. A Facebook page called ?I Support Gabby Douglas and HER HAIR? has collected 220 likes.

But overall, the chatter about Douglas? hair has been insensitive and unproductive. Instead of criticizing this teenage girl for her appearance, black women and men could have been using those 140 Twitter characters to celebrate the skill of an Olympic champion.

The wise black feminist author Alice Walker spoke and wrote about the constraints of hair and beauty ideals in black culture in an essay titled ?Oppressed hair puts a ceiling on the brain.?

When we engage in petty talk of perms and gels in the wake of a great triumph, we diminish ourselves and limit the potential of our young women and girls by sending the message that how they look overshadows what they think, imagine and accomplish.

Instead, we should be telling our girls that beauty is as beauty does. So what if 16-year-old Gabby Douglas doesn?t meet an unrealistic black hair-care standard?

She can swing and flip on parallel bars as the best all-around woman gymnast in the world; she can leap through the air like a shooting star.

We should all aspire to lift our heads so high.

Texas man foretells dire outcome messages 'I need to quit texting,' before driving into ravine

Despite our love of gadgets, we're not willing to give any slack to people that text while driving, and for one good reason: it's freaking dangerous. You've heard the grim stories before, but few incidents resonate to the heart of the matter like that of Chance Bothe from Texas. Despite his better judgment, the young man was texting a childhood friend while trying to bring the conversation to a close by saying, "I need to quit texting, because I could die in a car accident." That message was followed by one more, an unfortunate, "b right there." Regrettably, that final text caused him to miss a slight curve in the road and careen into a ravine. Chance is alive today -- thanks in large part to the fact that the accident was witnessed -- but the recovery hasn't been easy. In addition to a broken neck, a number of fractures and severe head trauma, he's already undergone two facial reconstructions. In the wake of the accident, Chance's friends and family have founded UnSend, an organization that dedicates itself to raising awareness about the dangers of texting and driving. Chance, too, is using his experience to educate others: "They just need to understand, don't do it. Don't do it. It's not worth losing your life."

Backpack Safety Advice | Los Angeles Informer

By Dr. Donald A. Ozello DC

Las Vegas Informer

Back and spine conditions acquired in childhood frequently lead to adult back issues. Eliminate a chief source of youth back pain by purchasing the correct backpack and utilizing it properly.

Backpacks are essential back-to-school items. Choose wisely and teach your child how to pack and wear it properly.

First and foremost pick a backpack that fits your child. Bigger is not better. Extra room encourages over packing.

Backpacks with individualized compartments position the contents more efficiently. Separate compartments prevent unbalanced weight distribution and allow for easier removal of unnecessary objects.

The shoulder straps must be adjustable to ensure proper fit. Adjustable straps position the pack over the back correctly.

Wide padded shoulder straps are recommended. Wider straps distribute forces to a greater area of the shoulder. Narrow straps dig into the shoulder and place unnecessary pressure on the upper back and clavicles.

The bottom edge of the backpack should never hang lower than four inches below the waistline. A low hanging pack places increased pressure on the child?s shoulders and upper back.

Instruct your child to always wear their backpack with both straps. Unsymmetrical stress on the body increases the risk of poor posture and potential for injury.

Keep the load as light as possible. Ensure the weight of the loaded backpack never exceeds 5 to 10 percent of the carrier?s weight. Heavy loads force the user to bend forward, thus place increased pressure on the spine. Excessive load, poor posture and repetitive strain are contributing factors for back injuries.

Utilize proper lifting technique when lifting a back pack. Never bend forward at the waist or twist while lifting. Squat while lifting in order to recruit the powerful leg, hip and gluteal muscles to perform the work.

Talk to your child?s school if the student is required to carry too many heavy objects. Work with teachers to find a solution before a health issue starts.

Follow these simple guidelines to lower your child?s risk of acquiring backpack-related back pain.
