Man who took Rockefeller name faces murder charge (AP)

ALHAMBRA, Calif. ? Evidence presented Wednesday in the California murder case against a German man who posed as an heir to the Rockefeller fortune includes a fractured skull and bones in a bag from Wisconsin, where the defendant had ties.

Los Angeles County prosecutors called expert witnesses to testify about the bones in a preliminary hearing to determine if Christian Gerhartsreiter will stand trial for murder.

Authorities say the bones have been matched to John Sohus, a 27-year-old computer engineer who vanished in 1985. They were unearthed in 1994 in wealthy San Marino, where Gerhartsreiter allegedly lived under the name Chris Chichester.

The defendant was brought to court in a baggy prison jumpsuit and was told he could not be referred to as Clark Rockefeller, a name he used in Boston where he was previously convicted of kidnapping his own daughter.

Superior Court Judge Jared Moses appeared taken aback when lawyers for Gerhartsreiter asked if their client could be referred to as Clark Rockefeller because that is the name many witnesses know him by.

Moses said he realized the defendant had many aliases but Gerhartsreiter would be called by his true name in court.

In 1985, Clark Rockefeller did not exist. The pseudonym, one of many fake identities assumed by Gerhartsreiter, would surface years later when he began cutting a swath across high society.

As a world-class impostor, he conned people into believing he was a physicist, an art collector, a ship captain and a financial adviser who renegotiated debt for small countries.

Much of the murder case will hinge on three bags of human bones found during the excavation for a swimming pool at a San Marino home.

One of the bags shown in photographs in court bore a logo from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where the defense acknowledges Gerhartsreiter had links.

Forensic experts called to the witness stand said the bones in the bags were wrapped in layers of plastic and stuffed into a fiberglass box buried 3 feet to 5 feet in the ground.

Details of their discovery were outlined by Judith Daye, an anthropologist who worked for the Los Angeles County coroner and was sent to the scene.

Using pictures, she identified pieces of the body and the bag with a logo reading "UWM Bookstore." There was also the word "Milwaukee." Daye pointed to leg bones inside jeans as well as a foot stuffed in a sock. She said the hole in which the material was found also contained boots, a zipper and a man's shirt.

Records previously reviewed by The Associated Press show that in 1981 Gerhartsreiter married a 22-year-old woman at the Dane County courthouse in Madison, Wis., enabling him to get a green card. Divorce records say he left the next day.

In the opening round of the hearing, Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian did not immediately directly connect the bones to Sohus. But further forensic experts were expected to make the identification based on DNA samples.

As Gerhartsreiter sat handcuffed to a chair, the apparent half-sister of Sohus, Lori Moltz, identified a birth certificate and adoption papers signed by her mother for a baby boy she said was the brother she never knew she had.

Authorities have said the discovery of Moltz and a DNA sample from her helped identify the bones.

Dr. Frank Sheridan, chief medical examiner for San Bernardino County, said he found that the person died of multiple fractures of the skull inflicted by a blunt object, possibly a baseball bat.

Sheridan said the skull was badly fractured and had to be sent to a U.S. Department of Defense facility in Hawaii to be reconstructed. A photo of the reconstructed skull was shown to the judge as Sheridan explained where the person was struck on the face and side of the head.

He said any of the blows would have killed the person without medical intervention and might have been fatal regardless.

On cross-examination, defense attorney Jeffrey Denner asked whether the blows could have been inflicted by a slight person or whether it would take a large individual to cause such damage. Gerhartsreiter is very slim.

The witness said a person of any size using a blunt object could inflict that level of damage.

Sohus' wife, Linda, also disappeared in 1985. No trace of her was found, though postcards purportedly written by her in France were sent to friends and relatives after she disappeared. The handwriting was never authenticated. Authorities presume she is dead, but they have not charged Gerhartsreiter with her death.

The other person who disappeared from San Marino at about the same time was the tenant known as Chichester.

Police explored various possibilities, including that Chichester had been in love with Linda Sohus and murdered her husband in a fit of jealousy. Authorities came close to finding him in the late 1980s when he was pulled over in Greenwich, Conn., driving Sohus' truck. But by the time the Department of Motor Vehicles had confirmed it was Sohus' truck, Chichester and the vehicle had vanished.

The man at the center of the mystery eluded authorities for years, moving to New York and then Boston where he hobnobbed in high society, claiming to be a Rockefeller and marrying a woman with whom he had a daughter. She divorced him when she found out he had duped her.

Last year he was convicted of kidnapping his daughter in Boston during a bitter custody dispute. Gerhartsreiter is serving a four- to five-year prison sentence. He would be eligible for parole this year if he was not facing the California charge, which could bring him 26 years to life in prison if convicted.

At the kidnapping trial, Denner claimed his client was suffering from a delusional disorder and was legally insane when he snatched his daughter during a supervised visit. Prosecutors portrayed him as a master manipulator who used multiple aliases and told elaborate lies about his past since moving to the United States in the 1970s.

Khloe Kardashian denies fertility treatment

Khloe Kardashian Odom is already a doting aunt. And now she's ready to be a doting mom.

But as for speculation that she is currently seeking fertility treatment in her new adopted hometown of Dallas?

MORE: See inside Khloe and Lamar's new Dallas pad!

Khloe herself took to Twitter to discount the Radar Online report:

"Because there is so much speculation here is my statement ... I am not at this time in my life considering any type of fertility treatments. If and when I do, I will shout it from the rooftops but for now its in Gods hands."

According to our source, Lamar Odom's wife of two years is "trying very hard" to get pregnant, though there's no word on exactly what options the 27-year-old has considered.

For her part, Khloe has always been open about her desire to start a family.

Shortly after their one-year anniversary, back in the fall of 2010, Khloe and Lamar told E! News that they were already working on adding to their family.

"We're on it right now," Lamar said. "And I'm having fun trying."

And just last month, a Twitter follower implored the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star to "please have beautiful babies soon!!" To which Khloe replied, "I'm waiting on the big man upstairs to bless us with that blessing ;)"

Syrian troops have withdrawn to city outskirts: Arab League

BEIRUT ? The head of the Arab League has said its peace monitors are helping to ease a violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Syria, but urged President Bashar al-Assad's government to carry out a peace plan in full.

Meanwhile army defectors whose armed insurgency has threatened to overshadow the peaceful popular uprising captured dozens of members of the security forces by seizing two checkpoints on Monday, the opposition said.

Army defectors also clashed with security forces at a third checkpoint, killing and wounding an unspecified number of troops loyal to Assad, opposition activists said.

Assad is struggling to defeat a popular uprising and avoid becoming the latest leader to be toppled by "Arab Spring" revolutions, after those of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

After nearly 10 months of violence in which the United Nations says more than 5,000 people have been killed, mostly unarmed civilians, an Arab League monitoring mission has spent the past week assessing Assad's compliance with a peace plan.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby said on Monday that Syria's military had now withdrawn from residential areas and was on the outskirts of the cities, but gunfire continued and snipers were still a threat.

"The latest telephone report said there is gunfire from different places, which makes it hard to say who is shooting who," Elaraby said in Cairo. "Gunfire should be stopped and there are snipers."

"We call upon the Syrian government to fully commit to what it promised."

PEACE PLAN

The League's plan calls for Assad to pull troops and tanks from the streets, free detainees and talk to his opponents.

Elaraby said the monitors had secured the release of 3,484 prisoners and succeeded in getting food supplies into Homs, one of the centres of the violence. "Give the monitoring mission the chance to prove its presence on the ground," he said.

But many Syrian opposition activists are skeptical that the mission can put real pressure on Assad to halt the violence.

On Sunday, the Arab Parliament, an 88-member committee of delegates from each of the League's member states, called for the monitors to leave Syria, saying their mission was providing cover for unabated violence and abuses by the government.

Two people were killed by gunfire in Homs on Monday, and the bodies of another two were handed over to their families, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Security forces killed a farmer in Douma, on the northeastern edge of Damascus, as they carried out raids searching for suspects wanted by authorities, it said.

TAKING RISKS

Kinan Shami, a member of the Syrian Revolution Co-ordinating Union activists' group, said from Damascus that people were taking huge risks by gathering in cities where Arab League monitors were expected, in the hope of talking to them.

"People expected them in Daraya yesterday on New Year's Day and thousands went to the main square, raised the Independence Flag on a mast and gathered around it. Security forces shot at them and killed two protesters," Shami said.

"The people are trying to show the monitors the repression and are risking their lives to meet them because everywhere they go the monitors are surrounded by security . . . Other than getting arrested and beaten or killed, they could easily face endless counts of treason and communicating with foreign powers."

But Issam Ishak, a senior member of the main opposition Syrian National Council, said the monitors must be given a chance. "Their presence is helping further erode the fear factor and is encouraging the expansion of the protests."

The reported attacks on military checkpoints came three days after the anti-government Free Syrian Army said it had ordered its fighters to stop offensive operations while it tried to arrange a meeting with the Arab League delegates.

Rami Abdelrahman, director of the Observatory, said Monday's operation had taken place in the northern province of Idlib. It was not immediately clear how many people had been killed or captured by the rebels.

The government bars most foreign journalists from operating in Syria, making it difficult to verify witness accounts. Assad blames the unrest on foreign-backed armed Islamists who officials say have killed 2,000 security personnel.

The state news agency SANA said a worker at a school in the city of Hama had been killed by armed men who captured her three days ago after her husband, who worked at the same school, refused their demands that he leave his job.

SANA also said a journalist working for state radio had died on Monday from wounds sustained when gunmen shot him several days ago in Daraya, in Damascus province.

The recently discovered Comet Lovejoy has been captured in stunning photos and time-lapse video taken from ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. The comet graced the southern sky after it had unexpectedly survived a close encounter with the Sun.

A new time-lapse video sequence was taken by Gabriel Brammer from ESO less than two days ago on 22 December 2011. Gabriel was finishing his shift as support astronomer at the Paranal Observatory when Comet Lovejoy rose over the horizon just before dawn.

In the words of Gabriel Brammer himself: "On the last morning of my shift I tried to try catch it on camera before sunrise. The tail of the comet was easily visible with the naked eye, and the combination of the crescent Moon, comet, Milky Way and the laser guide star was nearly as impressive to the naked eye as it appears in the long-exposure photos."

The sequence also features the pencil-thin beam of the VLT's Laser Guide Star set against the beautiful backdrop of the Milky Way, as astronomers conduct their last observations for the night.

ESO optician Guillaume Blanchard made a marvellous wide-angle photo of Comet Lovejoy and ESO Photo Ambassador Yuri Beletsky, captured the spectacle from Santiago de Chile. Blanchard said: "For me this comet is a Christmas present to the people who will stay at Paranal over Christmas".

This bright comet was also seen from the International Space Station in another stunning time-lapse sequence on 21 December as the crew filmed lightning on the Earth's night side.

Comet Lovejoy has been the talk of the astronomy community over the past few weeks. It was discovered on 27 November by the Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy and was classified as a Kreutz sungrazer, with its orbit taking it very close to the Sun [1]. Just last week, the comet entered the Sun's corona, a much-anticipated event, passing a mere 140 000 kilometres from the Sun's surface. A close shave indeed...

The comet was expected to break up and vaporise, but instead it survived its steaming hot encounter with the Sun and re-emerged a few days later, much to everyone's surprise. It is now visible from the southern hemisphere, appearing at dawn, and features a bright tail millions of kilometres long, composed of dust particles that are being blown away from the comet by the solar wind.

Lovejoy will now continue in its highly eccentric orbit around the Sun and once again disappear into the distant Solar System. It would be interesting to know if it will actually survive to re-appear in our skies in 314 years as predicted.

With this spectacular sequence of the 2011 Christmas Comet Lovejoy, ESO would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Apple TV Hacked to Run Fullscreen iPad Apps in 720p [VIDEO]

iOS hacker @stroughtonsmith previously demonstrated a hacked second generation Apple TV running iOS apps without AirPlay. Further progress has resulted in day 2 of his tinkering, and last night he released another video this time showing fullscreen iPad apps running in 720p:

More MobileX goodness! Much of today was spent making apps run as the full-screen iPad versions. I started writing a new launcher from scratch for the TV form factor; as of right now it?s not using IR remote input ? we?re controlling most things from VNC or over SSH.

Here you can see me demonstrating a few apps, like Facebook, Maps, Safari and YouTube. Most apps (and games) from the App Store should work too. As you can see, iOS kinda works on larger screens!

I?m @stroughtonsmith and MobileX was built by @TheMudkip, and we?ve spent the past two days together making this work on AppleTV. If Apple isn?t going to give us a way to make real AppleTV apps, then I guess we?ll have to make one ourselves :-)

Check out the video below running the iPad version of Facebook, Google Maps, and Safari on his Apple TV:

@stroughtonsmith also notes the Apple TV can run resolutions other than 720p, as 1024?768 also works. He has confirmed the latest Apple TV is essentially a $99 computer that runs iOS. The sky?s the limit on what can be achieved with these hacks, especially since the Apple TV 4.4.4 Seas0nPass untethered jailbreak was released. Definitely impressive stuff.
