Samsung says 100 million Galaxy S phones sold

9 hrs.

Samsung said Monday it?has?hit an important milestone: 100 million?of its Galaxy S series of phones have been sold. The Galaxy S III alone accounts for 40 million of those and is still going strong, as the current model in the lineup.

The news was announced on the company's Flickr page, where a number of photos?showed festivities revolving around the popular mobile brand. In the photo shown, Galaxy S phones, from the original to the III, are held by Samsung employees.

In a press release accompanying the photo, the company says that the 100?million?mark was passed on Jan. 13 ? two years and seven months after the original phone's launch in May,?2010. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S III is selling at a rate of 190,000 phones?every day, having just passed the sales of its predecessor.

By comparison (though it's a bit of an apples to oranges one), Apple hit the same landmark number in March,?2011, nearly four years after the original iPhone's launch. Of course, it was arguably the iPhone itself that enabled the huge sales of the Galaxy S series and other smartphones.
